The plot involves an experimental growth hormone being administered to the local waters of Noyo, California to improve the size and quantity of the salmon. However, after the effected Salmon are eaten by larger fish the predators mutate into Humanoid sea monsters. The Humanoids begin attacking local residents (mostly couples that are about to have sex.), killing the males and seemingly raping the females.
Despite it's shallow plot, Humanoids From The Deep doesn't have a hard time holding anyones attention. The dialogue scenes are pretty boring but they keep it short and aren't shy about showing a lot of nudity and monster attacks. There are a couple of funny moments in the movie, probably the funniest being involving a ventriloquist nerd about to have sex (it HAS to be his first time) with a pretty attractive young lady. Needless to say, he doesn't get too far before the Humanoids take him apart.
The gore is pretty unremarkable, there isn't really any particular kill that sticks out or is memorable in any way. We get a lot of pretty good aftermath shots, but it'd be nice to see some decapitations, severed limbs or something. For all the Humanoids that get shot in this movie it's unbelievable to me that we never got a head explosion. Despite all that, the creature effects look pretty good for a movie of this budget. I also liked the effort to give some of the creatures a slightly different look as if they are at a different stage of mutation than others.
Humanoids From The Deep is a time waster, there is no question in that. It's entertaining and sometimes funny, but never really good or bad per se. As a creature feature it's about as average as they come. There are a ton of monster attack scenes here. But with a lack of very memorable kills they dont really serve as anything more than a short term attention grabber. I liked Humanoids From The Deep, but there are plenty of movies more deserving of a recommendation. Check it out if you've watched everything else.
Body Count:14
Side Note: There actually is a pretty memorable gore scene at the end. Pretty much an Alien chestburster ripoff.
I wrote a previous comment but then it wouldn't let me post it. Pissed. So Rob Bottin (The Thing/The Howling) did the effects for this film when he was around 20 yrs old. There is a great beach scene with a chase sequence and the first rape scene in the middle. Lots of great subtext in the film dealing with racism, corporations, and racism. Also, I thought the ending at the festival was great. I love this film.
