Day 1: The Brain

The Brain is a film that I've been wanting see for a very long time. It was never released on DVD. So the only way to watch this bad boy is with the good ol' VCR. Just the way I like it. I've owned this tape for over a half year but I've somehow been able to resist the urge to watch it until now. In a month filled with bad movies, watching a good film brings a special kind of satisfaction. I had high hopes for this, so I've saved it for this month.

The plot follows a teenage rebel named Jim whose antics have landed him in a very odd therapy session. Jim's doctor, played by David Gale (Reanimator, Guyver), hosts a television show that brainwashes all those who watch it with assistance from a giant brain monster. Jim's brain rejects the mind control techniques presented in his therapy, but he is left haunted by illusions of The Brain attacking him. He now has to overcome his illusions, a brainwashed town out to get him, and none other than The Brain itself!

There aren't many dull moments in this film. It actually has a pretty decent body count, explosions, and the dialogue between chase scenes is always pretty entertaining.  I spent the majority of the movie screaming at the screen, which in this genre, is exactly what you want. This isn't a film that's going to boast great acting. But for it's apparent budget and the subject matter, I think the actors do a fine job here.

The creature effects of The Brain are awesome considering the budget. This thing just looks bad ass strolling around swallowing people. The gore is pretty good as well, we get a couple of decapitations (One with a punch, which is always plus for me.) and of course we get The Brain chomping his victim's heads and bodies. Special effects geeks should definitely take a look at this one, not because the effects are mind blowing, but that Brain just looks so damn awesome!

As I stated earlier, I waited a long time to watch this movie. I hyped it up in my mind and put expectations on it that I didn't think it could meet. To my surprise and delight, I think The Brain may have exceeded my expectations. The movie doesn't stop! It's non stop chase scenes, explosions, kills, and Giant Brains eating people! There's nudity too! What the fuck else could you ask for from a movie?! I can't believe that more people don't talk about this movie. I started this October off with a bang, and I have a hard time believing any other movie I watch will be able to reach the bar set by this one!

Body Count: 8
Side Note: Did David Gale ever do a bad movie? I know his career was short lived, but god! Everything I see him in is fucking gold.
